CofreTabs

Your tabs. Your vault. Your device. A retro terminal vault for the tabs you want to keep.

// 01

Overview

CofreTabs is a Manifest V3 browser extension that turns the tab you are reading into a permanent, searchable entry in a private local vault. It is built for people who hoard “read later” tabs, research sessions and rabbit holes — without handing their browsing history to a bookmark service.

Everything lives in IndexedDB inside your browser profile. There is no backend, no account, no sync, no analytics and no remote code. CofreTabs never saves a page automatically: the slide-over panel shows exactly what will be saved, and nothing is written until you press SAVE THIS TAB.

Version 1.1.0 completes the original roadmap — Favorites, custom folders, a compact folder grid, light and dark themes and in-app update notifications — all verified by a 98-test automated suite that runs against the real storage and UI code.

Support & Pricing

[ THE MODEL ]

CofreTabs is free — every download, every store listing, forever, for everyone. Nothing is behind a paywall and paying unlocks no extra features: if the extension saves you time, you can support the studio with a pay-what-you-want donation — 1, 2.99, 5 or 10 — or simply keep it free and star the repository instead.

What's Included

Legend:IMPLEMENTEDIN PROGRESSPLANNED
  • Explicit save panelIMPLEMENTED

    A right-side slide-over shows the page title, host, automatic folder and duplicate status before you commit — nothing is written until you press SAVE THIS TAB

  • Truthful save statesIMPLEMENTED

    Progress is tied to the real database write: double-clicks are rejected, and success is shown only after IndexedDB confirms the write — failures are shown as failures

  • Automatic website foldersIMPLEMENTED

    A bundled ICANN Public Suffix List (6,949 rules) files pages by registrable domain — news.bbc.co.uk goes under BBC, not co.uk — with www, subdomains, IP literals and malformed URLs handled

  • Full-page libraryIMPLEMENTED

    Search across title, URL, hostname, folder and notes; sort by newest, oldest, title, domain or folder; filter by folder

  • FavoritesIMPLEMENTED

    Heart any saved tab to collect it in the built-in Favorites view, in both the library and the panel — favoriting is a non-destructive tag, the tab stays in its folder

  • Custom foldersIMPLEMENTED

    Create, rename and delete your own folders from the library sidebar — deleting a folder moves its tabs to Trash instead of destroying them

  • Move tabs between foldersIMPLEMENTED

    An inline MOVE selector on every row re-files a saved tab immediately, preserving title, URL, favicon and notes

  • Compact folder gridIMPLEMENTED

    The panel shows up to nine folders in a 3×3 grid with icons, names and counts; accessible up/down controls step one row at a time when you have more

  • Trash with a way backIMPLEMENTED

    Move entries to Trash, restore them, or permanently delete them from Trash with confirmation — restored tabs return to their original folder when it still exists, otherwise they are re-filed by domain

  • Editable titles and notesIMPLEMENTED

    Add context to a tab, fix a noisy page title, or add a URL manually when a page cannot be injected

  • Portable JSON backupsIMPLEMENTED

    Export active and trashed entries with a versioned schema; import supports merge and replace, validates the entire file before writing, and reports duplicate/invalid counts

  • Light and dark themesIMPLEMENTED

    A theme switch in the library sidebar, applied to the library and the injected panel, persisted across launches, defaulting to your system preference

  • Update notificationsIMPLEMENTED

    The library checks the official GitHub releases feed at most once every 12 hours and shows a dismissible banner when a newer version exists — nothing is downloaded or installed without you

  • Restricted pages handled honestlyIMPLEMENTED

    On browser-internal pages (chrome://, the Web Store, PDF viewers) Chromium blocks injection — CofreTabs opens the library with an explanation and a manual-add option instead

  • Keyboard and screen-reader friendlyIMPLEMENTED

    Escape closes the panel or dialogs, focus is moved in and restored on close, status uses polite live regions, and animations respect prefers-reduced-motion

  • Minimal permissionsIMPLEMENTED

    Only activeTab and scripting — no tabs, history, bookmarks, host permissions or background network access

  • Sync between devicesPLANNED

    Deliberately absent today — JSON export/import is the supported way to move a vault manually

Inside CofreTabs

// SAVE

Review first, then press save

Click the toolbar icon and a slide-over panel shows the page title, host, the automatic folder it will be filed under, and a warning if the exact URL is already in your vault. The progress animation is tied to the real database write — a failed save is reported as a failure, never as success.

WRITE ACKNOWLEDGED
// ORGANIZE

A library that stays usable at scale

The full-page library is your vault: every saved tab with its folder, note and time. Website folders are created automatically from the real domain using a bundled ICANN Public Suffix List, and you can create your own folders, rename them, and move tabs between them with the inline MOVE selector.

LIBRARY — FOLDERS + MOVE
// FAVORITES

Keep the best within one click

Heart any saved tab to collect it in the built-in Favorites view, in both the library and the panel. Favoriting never moves or duplicates the tab — it stays in its folder and is only tagged, and the Favorites collection itself can’t be deleted.

FAVORITES VIEW
// SEARCH

Find any saved tab instantly

Search across title, URL, hostname, folder and notes; sort by newest, oldest, title, domain or folder; and filter by any folder or the Trash. Results update as you type, so a vault with hundreds of entries stays navigable.

SEARCH RESULTS
// TRASH

Nothing is lost by accident

Moving a tab to Trash hides it without destroying it. From the Trash you can restore entries — they return to their original folder when it still exists, otherwise they are re-filed by domain — or delete them permanently with confirmation. Deleting a folder also moves its tabs to Trash instead of wiping them.

TRASH — RESTORE OR DELETE
// BACKUPS

Your vault, as a file you control

Export the whole vault — active and trashed entries, folders, notes and favorites — as plain JSON. Import validates the entire file before anything is written, then merges into your current vault or replaces it, reporting duplicate and invalid counts. Backups never leave your machine unless you move the file yourself.

IMPORT — MERGE OR REPLACE
// THEMES

Retro terminal, day or night

The whole interface — panel and library — comes in dark and light themes. The default follows your system preference until you choose, and the choice persists across launches. Both themes keep the phosphor-green terminal identity the vault was designed around.

LIGHT THEME — LIBRARY
LIGHT THEME — PANEL

v1.1.0 — released 25 October 2026

Captured 2026-10-26 from the packaged v1.1.0 build (tag v1.1.0, commit 729c500): the real library page with real IndexedDB (three chrome.* APIs stubbed) and the real, unmodified panel script saving through the real vault write path — the same documented method the repository uses for its own screenshots. Demo fixture data only.

    Heart any saved tab to collect it here — favoriting is a tag, so the tab stays in its original folder and is never duplicated.

  • Search across the vaultv1.1.0 — released 25 October 2026

    Search matches title, URL, hostname, folder and notes — three hits for “vault” across different fields.

  • Trash with a way backv1.1.0 — released 25 October 2026

    Restore a trashed tab to its folder, delete it forever, or empty the Trash — nothing disappears by accident.

  • Import a backupv1.1.0 — released 25 October 2026

    The import dialog validates the whole file first and previews it before you choose merge or replace mode.

Quick Answers

What is CofreTabs?
CofreTabs is a Manifest V3 browser extension that saves the current tab into a private, searchable vault with one explicit click. Saved tabs, folders and notes live in IndexedDB inside your browser profile — no account, no server, no sync.
Does CofreTabs save my browsing automatically?
No. CofreTabs never saves a page automatically — not on install, not on toolbar click, not on navigation. The panel shows what would be saved, and only the explicit SAVE THIS TAB button writes a record to the local vault.
Does my data leave my device?
The extension uploads nothing: no analytics, no telemetry, no accounts, no cloud. Saved tabs never leave your browser profile. The single network request CofreTabs can make is an optional update check against the public GitHub releases feed (at most once every 12 hours) that contains no vault data; the check only powers a dismissible "update available" banner.
Is CofreTabs on the Chrome Web Store?
Not yet — it has not been submitted to the Chrome Web Store or any other browser store. It is installed today from the official GitHub release: download the ZIP, extract it and load the folder as an unpacked extension with developer mode enabled. Store listing copy is prepared in the repository for a future submission.
Which browsers does CofreTabs support?
Chromium-based browsers with Manifest V3 support: Chrome 102+, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and Opera. Firefox is not currently supported — the extension uses the Chromium extension APIs.
Can it save chrome:// pages or the Web Store?
No — Chromium blocks extension injection on browser-internal pages, the Web Store and PDF viewers. On those pages CofreTabs opens the library with an explanation and lets you add a valid http(s) URL manually.
Where is my data and what happens when I delete it?
Your data lives in IndexedDB inside your browser profile, stored unencrypted — anyone with access to your unlocked profile could read it, so export a backup before clearing browser data. Trash hides entries without deleting them; Delete Forever and Empty Trash remove them from the database; uninstalling the extension removes the vault. There is no server-side copy because none is ever created.

Development Status

RELEASEDCurrent status

CofreTabs v1.1.0 was released on 25 October 2026 and is free everywhere — the download links on this page serve that exact release, and future store listings will be free too. The source, tests (98/98 passing at release), build pipeline and release packaging are complete. The Chrome Web Store is a planned distribution channel — store listing copy is prepared in the repository, but the extension has not been submitted or published to any browser store yet. Until then, installation is from the GitHub release via “Load unpacked”. Development is documented on the dev log; donations are optional and never unlock features.
